Fit Model Guide (Part 1)
Hello! Whether you're new to fit modeling or have some experience, I want to share some insights to help us work better together on our next project.
My Photography Approach
Without getting too much in the details on this, I tend to be a heavy shooter meaning I take a lot of images. The idea is to shoot plenty, knowing we'll pare them down significantly in post production. This lets us try different things and not worry about perfection. It's about having fun and seeing what works. If you have an idea, let’s take risk and see how it looks. Once we find something we think has potential, I typically will ask for a lot of reps so we can make sure have have options.
On Creativity
I believe everyone brings something unique to the shoot. I like to combine your personality & creativity with what the environment gives us and my creativity. I encourage you to move around, try new poses, and just be yourself. It might feel a bit like a dance but that movement is what shows well. I like to take time to pause too and get a feel for what’s happening around us so we don’t miss any opportunities. We can always delete what doesn't work, so there's no pressure.
Communication
Your comfort and feedback matter to me. If something isn't working for you, or you need a break to adjust anything like hair or makeup, just let me know. I can get caught up in the moment, so I appreciate your input to make sure we're both comfortable. If you have had too many reps and can’t do another, let me know! If your feet are killing you, just give me a heads up :)
The look we’re going for
Our goal is to show you as an athlete, focusing on authenticity. We'll aim for shots that look natural but might also go for something a bit different or unusual. Anything to avoid the traditional fit modeling images. Feel free to experiment with different poses. I provide more detail on that posing thoughts here.
Practical details
Skin
I really like natural skin. Neutral makeup. We can easily edit out a blemish so no worries on those. For fitness I think moisturized skins looks the best. I like to have vaseline onsite or other products that you feel comfortable with.
Hair
Let’s try unique hair and/or hair that shows movement. Happy to get creative on options for hair.
Nails
If you have something unique with your nails, that is okay, just let me know! Let’s at least touch on it so we don’t have a style conflict.
For men, natural is great, taken care of is perhaps a good way to describe it.
Facial Hair
This again will come down to the specific project.
Outfits and Shoes
We'll have options for outfit changes, so feel free to bring a variety. If we're shooting outdoors and changing shoes, we may do that on set to keep the shoes from getting too muddy or dirty. Also, it's a good idea to wear something comfortable (discreet) as a base layer for quick or easier changes.
After the Shoot
The brands we work with usually share the photos first. But don't worry, you'll get to share them too, typically within a month depending on the campaign.
