How Improv Comedy Has Made Me a Better Photographer

My first live show in front of an audience.

This feels obvious but maybe it’s not because I still have friends/family that refuse to do it, but improv comedy has made me better at almost everything that involves communication. (It can be intimidating for some so that may be a better explanation for the lack of attendance)

For me it’s like going to the gym but for my brain. I’ve found that improv has helped me become a better person overall, and naturally, that translates into my work.

When you’re working on set—especially in photography—building concepts and creating images requires clear communication. You need to have fun, think on your feet, and connect with people. Improv has been hugely helpful in all of that. It’s improved my ability to communicate on set, with clients, and throughout the entire process—before, during, and after a project. It’s also helped me share my vision while keeping things fun and lighthearted.

At the end of the day, we’re creating art. People want to enjoy the process, and if we can walk away from a shoot feeling like we had a great time, that’s a success.
